Living in a small space means getting creative with storage.
Between kids’ toys, extra kitchen items, and everyday clutter, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s why I decided to design a modern fireplace that wasn’t just beautiful but functional too, with hidden storage built right in.
Best of all, I used affordable materials and repurposed items to make this project budget-friendly.
The Plan
My goal was to:
Add storage for toys and kitchen overflow.
Create a stylish focal point for the room.
Keep costs low by reusing materials and shopping smart.
What I Used
Here’s how I made it happen:
Leftover Cabinets: I repurposed cabinets from a job site for storage on both sides of the fireplace.
Mantle Drawer: A custom pull-out drawer in the mantle adds hidden storage for smaller items like remotes or chargers.
Affordable Tiles: 24x48” tiles from Floor and Decor gave the fireplace a sleek, modern look.
Fireplace Insert: I found a cozy electric fireplace on Amazon for warmth and ambiance.
Slat Wall Accent: A slat wall from Wayfair added a modern, textured finish.
The Process
Storage on the Sides: Repurposed cabinets became hidden storage, perfect for toys and kitchen extras.
Hidden Mantle Drawer: The pull-out mantle drawer adds even more storage without taking up extra space.
Tile and Slat Wall: Large tiles created a clean, modern look, while the slat wall brought warmth and texture.
The Outcome
The finished fireplace is more than just a pretty feature—it’s a practical storage solution! It keeps the space organized and clutter-free while adding style and character to the room.
Takeaway Tips
Reuse Materials: Repurpose items to save money and reduce waste.
Add Hidden Storage: Think beyond traditional options—like using a mantle as a drawer.
Shop Smart: Affordable finds can still create a high-end look.
